Birch Aquarium Teams Up with Dotworkz and HD Relay for Installation, Live Web Streaming of New HD Kelp Cam |
Showcasing its towering, two-story kelp forest, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, has unveiled its new HD Kelp Cam on its website http://aquarium.ucsd.edu/Education/Learning_Resources/Kelp_Cam/ . According to Birch Aquarium, its kelp forest off the coast of La Jolla’s coast is one of only a handful displayed at public science centers worldwide and features more than 175 fish and invertebrates, representing 35 species.
Dotworkz Systems installed the project’s IP Network cameras and mounting solutions while HD Relay is providing its ongoing live streaming video feed in high definition.
Utilizing HD Relay’s own eLivestream Service – a fast, bandwidth friendly HD live video technology – the HD Kelp Cam can accommodate 100,000+ viewers simultaneously at a seamless 30 frames per second without interfering with the feed’s display. The feed can also provide live audio streaming in conjunction with the video.
With the help of a Dotworkz XERO NVR, the live streaming feed is also giving children staying at Rady’s Children Hospital, San Diego, a chance to watch the Kelp Cam from the comfort of their own beds. The XERO is a small, powerful video storage and camera management system, ideal for remote edge recording.

"The eLiveStream system is so reliable that I sometimes lose track of it being on. It isn't until a skier or other visitor mentions how much they enjoy watching the video does it sink in what a great tool it is. Being able to control the pan, tilt and zoom functions provides greater freedom to explore our mountain and the many exciting activities we stage year round."
